Mate - ONI Services - FER2612

A vacancy has arisen for a Mate position on our Outer North Isle Services, however you will be required to cover on other routes as required. The Rota for this is 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off plus an additional 4 weeks annual leave per complete year served.

Applicants must hold as minimum:

  • Minimum entry requirement, STCW Reg. II/2 Chief mate near coastal less than 3000 GT Consideration will be given to candidates with a higher qualification.
  • GMDSS GOC.
  • Valid ENG1.
  • Updated STCW Personal Survival Techniques.
  • Updated STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Advanced.
  • Updated STCW Advanced Fire Fighting.
  • Updated STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats.
  • Updated STCW Medical first aid.

Ideally candidates should also hold the following, but training will be provided for the right candidate.

  • STCW Crowd Management.
  • STCW Passenger Safety, Cargo Safety and Hull Integrity.
  • STCW Crisis Management and Human Behaviour.

The successful candidate will be required to adhere to the company’s policies, including the Drug and Alcohol Policy which includes provision for random testing without cause.

The salary scale for this post is £55,106 to £58,243 pa inclusive of DIA (currently £2,997) subject to qualifications and experience.

The Company operates a contributory pension scheme currently at 15% and a sick pay scheme.

Accommodation can be provided onboard.

A permanent vacancy exists for a Master to serve onboard Orkney Ferries vessels, primarily on the Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre service. However, you may be required to cover on other routes as required.

  • Valid Masters STCW CoC or Boat Master License - Passenger Vessel Operations: up to 250 passengers within following areas: Cat D Kirkwall / Rousay.

  • Updated STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Updated STCW Elementary first aid

Ideally candidates should also hold the following, but training will be provided for the right candidate.

Check-in Assistant / Customer Services Adviser (3 Posts) - FER2614

3x 35 hours per week (average), Shift working 6 days over 9

Temporary for a period up to 31st May 2027 with the possibility of extension

£33,128 - £33,810 per year / £18.15 - £18.53 per hour (Including Distant Islands Allowance and 10% shift allowance, subject to a pay rise of 3.5% as of 01 April 2026)

We are looking to recruit committed and enthusiastic individuals to become part of the Orkney Ferries Check-in and Customer Services team. The successful candidates will primarily be based at our Kirkwall office, however you would need to be prepared to provide cover at our Houton and Tingwall offices where required.

This position represents a challenging opportunity assisting in a range of duties including checking in vehicles and passengers prior to embarkation onto Orkney Ferries vessels, as well as customer services duties, dealing with customer enquiries, taking bookings and details for the Ferry booking system and providing varied administrative support.

Candidates will also be able to demonstrate the ability to establish good working relationships with all levels of staff and to provide a professional service to the public. With a busy workload you must be organised and able to work on own initiative and prioritise work in order to cope with tight deadlines. Excellent organisational, administrative and communication skills are essential for this role.

Candidates should hold a qualification at SCQF 5/6 i.e., SVQ2, National 5, Standard Grades, O Grade, Intermediate 2, SVQ3, Higher, National Certificate, Foundation Apprenticeship, or, where the essential qualification is not held, you should have a minimum of 2 years previous relevant experience, as detailed in the Job Requirements section of the Job Description.

A full and current driving license is essential.
