General Purpose Deck Rating – 2 Posts

Shapinsay Service

Vacancies exist for 2 General Purpose Deck Rating to serve on board Orkney Ferries vessels, primarily on the route above, however you will be required to cover on other routes as required. Duties will be varied between deck rating, purser or cook as required. The Rota for this is 2 weeks on/2 weeks off plus an additional 4 week’s annual leave per complete year served.

Certification required for this position is as detailed below, however training will be provided if a candidate does not hold any/or some of the certifications:

  • Valid ENG 1 medical certificate.
  • STCW PSSR.
  • STCW Elementary First Aid.
  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques.
  • STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (3-day course).

Candidates should ideally also hold STCW Crowd Management, STCW Crisis Management and Human behaviour, STCW Passenger Safety Cargo Safety and Hull Integrity certification and Elementary Food Hygiene certificate but training for these can be provided for the successful candidate, if required.

Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) is desirable, but candidates not holding an EDH will be considered and will be required to gain their EDH certificate within 2 years.

Candidates must be prepared to reside on the island when on duty shift.

The salary scale is £29,079 to £32,653 pa plus DIA £2,742, subject to qualifications and experience.

The Company operates a contributory pension scheme currently at 15% and a sick pay scheme.

Seasonal Customer Service Adviser – 2 Posts

Temporary up to 30 September 2024

35 hours per week, shift working over seven days

£30,363 - £31,026 / £16.64 - £17.00 per hour (including shift allowance and Distant Islands Allowance)

We are looking to recruit committed and enthusiastic individuals to become part of the Customer Services team within the Orkney Ferries offices for the summer season.

These positions represent a challenging opportunity, assisting in a range of duties including customer services, dealing with enquiries, taking bookings and details for the Ferry booking system and administrative support.

Candidates should hold a qualification at SCQF 5/6 level, i.e., SVQ2, National 5, Standard Grade, O Grade, Intermediate 2, SVQ3, Higher, National Certificate, Foundation Apprenticeship, or have a minimum of 2 years previous relevant experience.

Candidates should also be able to demonstrate the ability to establish good working relationships with all levels of staff and to provide a professional service to the public.


With a busy workload you must be organised and able to work on your own initiative and prioritise work in order to cope with tight deadlines.

Experience in the use of Microsoft Office packages and excellent organisational, administrative and communication skills are also essential for this role.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.

Vacancies exist for 6 Summer Stewards for the forthcoming Summer season to serve on board Orkney Ferries vessels, primarily on the route above. Duties will be varied. The Rota for this is 1 week on/1 week off.

Certification required for this position is as detailed below, however training will be provided if a candidate does not hold any/or some of the certifications:

  • Valid ENG 1 medical certificate.

  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques.
  • STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (3-day course).

Candidates should ideally also hold Elementary Food Hygiene certificate

The salary scale is £23,407.00 plus DIA £2,742 per annum pro rata.
